An original Super Nintendo console with all the original cords and controllers could be worth up to $100. Their value varies depending on the condition and if you have two controllers or not.
But if you find an SNES in good working condition with lots of accessories and the original box and paperwork you could have a $350 console on your hands.

The main factor in determining the worth of an original Super Nintendo (SNES) is the condition followed closely by how well the console works.

The original Super Nintendo console case was built to last. But being plastic they do get chips and dings that can affect the value. Also many were known to get discolored. The closer to the original color the higher the value of the console.

Does it work well?

If most cleaned SNES games work the first time you put them in, then the console is worth more. But if you have to continually take the cartridge and reload to get it to work or games simply don’t work at all then the value of the Super Nintendo decreases.

The next factor in value is the condition of the cartridge. Depending on how “clean” the cartridge is can really help or hurt the value of the game. Here are some points to consider regarding how clean an SNES cartridge is.

Does the SNES cartridge have any writing on it?
For some crazy reason, people would use a permanent marker to write their names on their cartridges. With a lot of work you might be able to get this off but leaving it on there can really devalue a game.
If you attempt to remove it beware that some techniques can ruin a label if you get something on the label of the SNES cartridge.
Does the NES cartridge have any stickers on it?
Back when game rentals were a big thing every rental place had stickers with their name and maybe a scan code on each cartridge. While stickers are not usually a bad thing, sometimes they would put security stickers that would leave a mark or residue if removed. These things were almost impossible to remove and you still find games with these stickers on them.
Is the label damaged or missing?

A complete label that is in good shape will price much better than a game with a ripped or torn label. While some people just want to play the game, most collectors will want an intact flawless label if possible.
Does the game come with a manual and an original box?
Most people discarded their original Super Nintendo game boxes. Finding an original manual and box can mean double or triple the value of your game. The better the condition of the box and manual the more value your Super Nintendo game is worth.

Skyrim
Skyrim is my go-to video game for beating stress
Fighting dragons reduces stress? Yes for some people it can. And the awesome thing about Skyrim is you can do so many things and overpower your character that it can feel like a Sims game rather than an action RPG.
From the very beginning, you don’t have to follow the main quest line. There have been times I have played the game for days and never completed a single part of the main quest outside the opening intro that is forced on you.
The beautiful scenery and gentle music can help decompress after a long stressful day at work. Or you can run around and pickpocket everyone in a small village until you get thrown into jail. That is the beauty of Skyrim so many options and so many ways to play the game and let off steam.
Donut County
This was a Game Pass find for me. I had never heard of the game but decided to try it one day. And honestly, I loved every minute of it.
The storyline is weird but entertaining. And the basic concept is you make holes and suck items down into the hole. If you have ever played the mobile game hole.io it is a similar take with a twist.
Red Faction Guerilla
This 3rd person shooter might be another game that doesn’t seem like it would be good for someone releasing stress. But the open world environment where you can pretty much destroy anything is so satisfying.
Yes, there are enemies that will show up and try to shoot you. But once you get some good weapons those goons don’t stand a chance. You can also do the multiplayer challenges and just try to see how much damage you can do in a set amount of time.
Goat Simulator
Who doesn’t want to just bash things with your head and eat grass all day? Goat Simulator doesn’t take itself seriously and that is what makes this game such a great stress reliever.
One of the most stress-reducing aspects of Goat Simulator is the sheer absurdity of the gameplay. The game’s physics engine is intentionally unpredictable, causing the goat to flop around and wreak havoc in hilarious ways. Players can launch themselves into the air, crash into objects, and even summon a flock of goats to follow them around.
This randomness and lack of consequences for failure can be liberating for those who are feeling stressed or anxious, providing an opportunity to let go and simply have fun. Overall, Goat Simulator is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a lighthearted and entertaining game to help them unwind and reduce stress.
Medieval Dynasty
One thing I love about this game is the options. Medieval Dynasty is dubbed as a survival city builder. Where you have to build your dynasty but also worry about the elements and hunger.
But the options in this game make it where you can turn off all the survival mechanics and just make it one big sandbox. Need to chop down and carry 1000 logs to build a few houses? No problem. Don’t want to worry about hunting or fishing to eat? Turn off that part of the game.
Even running your village isn’t all that stressful. The villagers can pretty much be set on auto-pilot once you get the hang of the game mechanics and understand how to keep the resources flowing.
Microsoft Flight Simulator
I almost didn’t include this game on this list. Because of heights, fear of flying, and fear of crashing this game may make people run in the opposite direction. But being that it is a total simulation none of those things really matter.
You can pick a well-known airport or fly out of a local airport and go anywhere in the world. The controls can be difficult at times but that can sometimes lead to some hysterical moments that are sure to get your endorphins running.
PowerWash Simulator
There are so many simulator genre games in the market, including farming, car mechanic, surgeon, and more. But PowerWash Simulator is just satisfying.
Firing up your powerwasher and cleaning off the van or house just gives that feeling of a job well done. There are no hard time limits or ways to fail so just take your time and do a great job of cleaning.
Super Mega Baseball
Super Mega Baseball is a fun and relaxing baseball simulator
If you are a fan of sports games but hate how realistic some of the bigger titles have become. Then Super Mega Baseball might be the best stress-reducing sports game.
There are actually 3 versions of this game and each iteration keeps improving on a fantastic formula.

Each stadium has unique features and almost every team player has a uniqueness to them to make them stand out.
You don’t have to stress out if you are even good at baseball. Turn the difficulty all the way down and every player on your team can hit a moonshot.
Craftopia
This little gem is one of my favorites. While the bosses can be stressful if you are not prepared for them the crafting and base building has really grown into its own niche.
In Craftopia you can build a huge base, create farms, craft new weapons, and breed animals. You can even breed the NPCs and have your own little warrior farm. There is just an endless list of possibilities and the complexity of the automations means you can have really unique bases.
Updates really added some unique content like mini racers and variations to your building materials. The game has no real story and the only thing that could really stress you out is the survival part where you need to eat every so often. But even that mechanic doesn’t weigh on you too much.

As a gaming expert and lifelong NES gamer, I know how important it is to find great NES games without breaking the bank.
While retro video games can be a lot of fun, they can also be expensive, especially if you’re looking for rare or hard-to-find titles. But fear not, fellow gamers on a budget!
Admit it. You tried to shoot this dog.
It is possible to build an impressive NES game collection without spending a fortune. I’m going to share some Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games that won’t drain your wallet and can be purchased for less than $10.
Whether you’re a seasoned retro gamer or just starting out, this guide will help you build an amazing collection of classic video games without breaking the bank.
Rad Racer
Rad Racer on the NES is a great racing game for under $10
The first game on the list is not only a fantastic NES game but also one of the cheapest on the list. For less than $5 you can grab a loose copy of Rad Racer for the NES.
Rad Racer was one of my all-time favorite racing games on the NES. It offered two types of vehicles to race in and was actually designed to be one of the first 3D racing games ever developed. It sold almost 2 million copies.
Double Dribble
Double Dribble on the NES is my favorite under $10 basketball game
While this game isn’t going to win any awards for its realism Double Dribble on the NES has to be the biggest trash-talking game ever made. At least in my household, it was.
Double Dribble was not only a decent basketball game but it brought some unique features that no other game at the time had. The close-up dunk cams and the halftime shows made this game stand out from the competition and almost everyone that had an NES wanted this game.
Pro Wrestling
I would pick Starman every time I played Pro Wrestling on the NES
With favorites like Kin Corn Karn, The Amazon, and Starman pro wrestling brought the ring to your living room on the NES. My first introduction to Pro Wrestling was at a local mall that had an arcade stand-up with Pro Wrestling installed.
This was at a time when the WWF (now WWE) was coming on strong and wrestling was becoming one of the biggest sports on television. Pro Wrestling allowed you to climb the top rope and body slam your opponents outside the ring.
The NES version not only had a fantastic single-player mode but playing side by side with your siblings brought the ring to life and this game is hard to find a challenger that could have duplicated its success.
Monopoly
The NES Monopoly port is my favorite port of the board game
Do you enjoy playing Monopoly but don’t enjoy playing with other humans? Or maybe you don’t have other humans to play with. Well, this version actually has a pretty serviceable AI opponent to play against.
This is probably one of the best versions of Monopoly I have ever played and was always fun and enjoyable.
Lunar Pool
Although I preferred real pool, Lunar Pool is a great NES game under $10
Lunar Pool just blew me away. Yes, it is just pool but they made it some weird combination of pool and mini-golf and I love it. I’m not sure where the “Lunar” part ever came from other than it sounded cool but this pool game can provide hours of fun for budget-minded NES players.
Black Bass
Black Bass is one of the best NES fishing games ever made
Fishing games just never really worked on the NES. Until Black Bass was released no other fishing game added realism like weather conditions or what bait to use.
Now Black Bass was far from perfect and sometimes you would just catch anything but Black Bass but it was one of the best fishing games from the NES era.
Base Wars
Base Wars combined robots with baseball. Enough said!
Robots and baseball. What’s not to love? Instead of a force out you can force your robots to fight it out over the base.
Base Wars even tried to keep true to traditional baseball so if you love baseball this game is a must-grab for your NES collection.
R.C. Pro-Am
R.C. Pro-am was Mario Kart before Mario Kart was a thing
We all love racing games. But racing remote control cars that can shoot your opponents takes it to a whole new level.
This game could be seen as the inspiration for Mario Kart or other racing games where part of the objective is to disable your opponents to gain an advantage.
While the second game in this series can set you back more money the original will cost less than $10.
Baseball Simulator 1.000
Although not my favorite baseball game on the NES the best one for under $10
Baseball Simulator 1.000 was not only a good baseball sim but also added ultra moves that your players could execute. It added a fresh take on baseball but also you had to use strategy and not use all your ultra points too early.
Silent Service
Silent Service is a fantastic NES game that costs less than $10
Silent Service was first developed for the computer and was designed by Sid Meier. If you are not familiar with Sid Meier he was the one who brought us the Civilization franchise.
In Silent Service you controlled a sub and would go up against enemy destroyers. You could choose from multiple war patrols, you had a variety of enemy ships to face, and the gameplay was top-notch.
NES Open Tournament Golf
Also known as Mario golf, NES Open Tournament golf is a steal for under $10
NES Open Tournament Golf is one of my all-time favorite golf games. The features and graphics they packed into an NES game under $10 are hard to believe.
NES Open Tournament Golf had you playing golf as Mario and Luigi and even featured cameos from Princess Toadstool (aka Peaches) and Donkey Kong.

Nintendo is the oldest and most well-known video game company today with hit franchises like Super Mario Bros, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, and Kirby. Ever since the release of the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), they have figured out how to dominate every console generation even when they didn’t have the most powerful console.
And with every console or handheld, they release Nintendo keeps growing its user base and innovating to keep things fresh. But with all this popularity it also means one thing. Their games never seem to go on sale!
Even months or years after a release popular titles on the Nintendo Switch are still selling at the same retail price they sold for when they first released. But I’m here to tell you that Nintendo games do go on sale and here are some tips on when that happens so that you can save money the next time you are looking for a Nintendo Switch game.
Black Friday

Black Friday is typically the name given to sales that occur the Friday directly after Thanksgiving (in the USA). But over the years Black Friday sales have migrated all the way to the beginning of November. Some companies do an entire month of sales during November to push shoppers into spending more money.
But for Nintendo shoppers, this means huge savings. In my opinion, this is the best time to snag a great deal on a Nintendo game. GameStop while they still last has typically sold games buy 1 get 1 free or buy 2 get 1 free. Even though these are usually used games there is no shame in buying used cartridges as they last forever.
Other retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart take this opportunity to heavily discount games also. They will generally discount games that typically retail for $59.99 and knock off $10 to $30 dollars.
For example, for Black Friday 2022, Wal-Mart had Legend of Zelda Link’s Awakening on sale for $29.99. That game now retails for $49.99 in 2023. They also had other various Nintendo Switch games discounted up to 50% off.
Event Sales

If you don’t mind purchasing your games digitally you can always watch for Nintendo games on sale during special events. On 4/19/2023 Nintendo did an Indie Games (Nintendo Direct) show to promote indie game development on the Switch. To help keep the spotlight on this they ran an indie game sale on their digital store. With prices up to 75% off you could get some games for under $5.
Also, every Thursday Nintendo does a sale on select digital games in their Switch store. You can find some pretty heavy discounts but it will all be digital only.
Previously also around E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), they would run a big sale but it looks like E3 might be dead. However, Nintendo is doing what is called Nintendo Directs now. These will be more frequent events and more compact. More than likely sales will correspond to the Nintendo Direct shows.
MAR10 (March 10, Mario Day)

Another special event to watch for is March 10 of every year. Nintendo likes to play on the MAR10 looks like Mario and you can occasionally catch Mario-related games on sale on this day. Other retailers like to pick up on this action also so keep an eye out for deals from those retailers that might carry Switch games.
Seasonal Sales
Most big digital gaming stores like Xbox and Sony like to run sales around holidays. One of those big promotion times is around Halloween. Typically you can find horror or horror-related games on sale during October so if you are in the market for horror genre Switch games that might be your time to buy.
Are Nintendo Games on Steam?
No. Unfortunately, Nintendo games are only on the Nintendo eShop or you must purchase physical copies from big box retailers or Amazon. Steam is not authorized to sell Nintendo games. Although I imagine they could get a license to sell digital copies it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense because you could only play them on a Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo is also very particular about people playing older versions of their popular games. They don’t like for anyone to emulate game ROMs illegally and will shut them down very quickly.
Where can I get the best deal on Nintendo Games?
Find Nintendo games on sale on second-hand sites like eBay or Facebook Marketplace
Maybe you are having issues finding sales for Nintendo games. If so there are some websites that provide an up-to-date list and historical tracking for Nintendo game prices.

But if you can do a little leg work and want a good deal on physical copies you have a few options.

And because they offer some good filtering and sorting you can usually find a good deal on a Nintendo game. Just make sure and check the seller’s feedback so you don’t buy from a shady seller.
Clearance Sales

One of the best ways to catch a Nintendo game on sale is to buy them on clearance at big box retailers. Retailers like Walmart or Best Buy will want to eventually move products so they will mark down older games significantly to make room for new releases.
Walmart also will put its Nintendo games on clearance during store remodels. Every few years they remodel their stores and with those remodels they would rather sell off inventory than have to move it around. The other day I picked up some Nintendo Switch games for 60% off in my local Walmart because they are remodeling the store.
While Nintendo games may seem to never go on sale, there are actually a number of ways to snag a great deal on your favorite titles. Black Friday sales, special events, seasonal sales, and websites that track historical pricing can all help you save money on your Nintendo Switch games.

What kind of condition is the case?
The original Nintendo console case was built to last. But being plastic they do get chips and dings that can affect the value. Also many were known to get discolored. The closer to the original color the higher the value of the console.

If either the RF cable or power adapter is not original that can cause the value of the Nintendo to decrease. Also, original controllers help to increase the value of the console.
Does it work well?
One of the biggest issues with a Nintendo is the red flashing light. Most of us remember pulling out the cartridge and blowing on it in hopes of getting the game to work.
Most of the time it was more luck than the actual blowing because the issue was the 72-pin connecter that reads the data from the cartridge. You can either replace the 72-pin connector or refurbish it to get the console working like new again.
If most cleaned NES games work the first time you put them in, then the console is worth more. But if you have to continually take the cartridge and reload to get it to work or games simply don’t work at all then the value of the Nintendo decreases.

There are a few games that are harder to find or have a rarer 5-Screw variant that gives them more value. But a popular game like Dragon Warrior one of the first and best RPGs on the NES sells for less than $10 for just the game.
One of the rarest Nintendo (NES) games ever made and the most valuable is the Nintendo World Championship cartridge. Less than 200 were made for the world championships held in 1990. Several of these have sold at private auctions at close to $10,000 dollars.

The first factor that can affect the worth of a Nintendo game is “Does it work?”. The cartridges were built to last and you will find very few that don’t work. Most of the time when they don’t work the cartridge just needs a good cleaning.
The next factor in value is the condition of the cartridge. Depending on how “clean” the cartridge is can really help or hurt the value of the game. Here are some points to consider regarding how clean a cartridge is.
Does the NES cartridge have any writing on it?
For some crazy reason, people would use a permanent marker to write their names on their cartridges. With a lot of work you might be able to get this off but leaving it on there can really devalue a game.
Does the NES cartridge have any stickers on it?

Back when game rentals were a big thing every rental place had stickers with their name and maybe a scan code on each cartridge. While stickers are not usually a bad thing, sometimes they would put security stickers that would leave a mark or residue if removed. These things were almost impossible to remove and you still find games with these stickers on them.
Is the label damaged or missing?
A complete label that is in good shape will price much better than a game with a ripped or torn label. While some people just want to play the game, most collectors will want an intact flawless label if possible.
Does the game come with a manual and an original box?
Most people discarded their original Nintendo game boxes. Finding an original manual and box can mean double or triple the value of your game. The better the condition of the box and manual the more value your Nintendo game is worth.
Nintendo games can be worth a lot of money. But buyer beware as some are only worth a few bucks. Depending on the rarity, how many screws they have, condition, and demand your NES cartridge prices can vary.

March 23, 2023Why do some Sega Genesis cartridges have a yellow tab? Was it invented for security reasons? Did they do it so you could have a better grip on the cartridge? Or was there a bigger explanation of why Sega had cartridges with a yellow tab?

The answer is a little more complex than it seems. It involves crazy license agreements, reverse engineering, and the freedom for developers to make and market the games they want. Read on for an interesting reason as to why some Sega Genesis cartridges have yellow tabs.
Background on the video game industry in the 80s
Back in the 80s, two big players were in the video game market. Nintendo had the NES that they released in 1983 and were dominating the home console market, and Sega was an up-and-coming console maker who was making waves with the Sega Master System and eventually released the Sega Genesis in 1988.
Electronic Arts, also known as EA, was a big game publisher in the 80s. Trip Hawkins founded EA around 1982 and most of their games were released on the PC. In 1988, Electronic Arts wanted to get a piece of the huge cartridge-based home console market and started to talk to Nintendo about getting their games to their consoles.
Licensing agreement woes
At the time Nintendo had the biggest market share, but Trip Hawkins was put off by Nintendo’s restrictive licensing for third-party developers. Nintendo’s policy for third-party developers was as follows:
Buy an expensive dev kit from Nintendo
Pay high royalty fees for each game sold
Nintendo controls the production of the games
And Nintendo approves what games make it to stores
This was a hard pill to swallow for EA. They were moving tons of games in the PC market and didn’t want to share their profits with Nintendo.
Now here is Sega coming along with the next great console, the Sega Mega Drive aka Sega Genesis. 16-bit graphics, improved sounds, more colors, and best of all for EA, it wasn’t Nintendo. Surely a new up-and-coming system would be eager to sign any and all third-party developers to get games on their new system right?
But unfortunately, EA was met with the same licensing agreements and restrictions that halted a deal with Nintendo. EA tried to negotiate for a year with Sega to come to a better agreement. But after months of failed negotiations, EA was essentially told if they wanted their games on Sega they would have to reverse engineer the Genesis.
Reverse Engineered

Well, that is exactly what EA did. They hired some engineers, got some Sega Genesis, and begin dissembling and reverse-engineered the Sega Genesis. All in the name of being able to put their software on Sega Genesis cartridges.
Now, most of you are probably thinking this wasn’t exactly legal. But if you remember during this same time period there was precedence for reverse engineering. Compaq had done the same thing with IBM to make “IBM Compatible” PCs. As long as EA didn’t use any of Sega’s proprietary code they could figure out how to make cartridges.

After another year of work, EA had finally ported one of their most popular titles “Populous” to a Sega Genesis cartridge. They made plans to show what they did at a CES booth. But Trip Hawkins being the savvy CEO of a company decided to talk to Sega one more time and negotiate a deal.
Sega had caught wind of what EA had done by this time. They were absolutely horrified that EA was going to start signing deals with third-party developers and making their games on the Genesis and cutting Sega out completely.
After a short time Sega and EA came to a new deal, but this time the deal was favorable for EA. The new deal allowed EA to make as many titles as it wanted to, they could approve their own titles, EA would control manufacturing, and the royalty fees were more favorable.
But why the Yellow Tabs?

The yellow tab on the EA Sega Genesis cartridges was to differentiate the EA-made cartridges from the standard Sega-licensed cartridges. It was mostly for marketing and visibility. Just a few weeks after that CES and the agreement the yellow tab cartridges were hitting the shelves.
By the end of the year, EA released Madden football and it sold almost half a million copies. and today it is one of the biggest-selling franchises in the history of video games.
The yellow-tabbed cartridges represent more than just a marketing gimmick for EA. It represents a third-party developer standing up to the console makers and making them blink first.
Today this would be equivalent to EA reverse engineering an iPhone to figure out how to get their games on their phone without them being on the Apple Store.
The history behind the yellow-tabbed Sega cartridges is both interesting and controversial. If Sega would have pursued legal action there was a very good chance they could have stopped EA in its tracks. It also showed that there was a time that EA stood up for their developers and wanted everyone to enjoy the games they made.
But history would show that this reverse engineering not only helped EA become an even bigger video game company but helped Sega earn a foothold in the console race by having some of the best titles available on their console.

Do you prefer action, adventure, role-playing, strategy, simulation, sports, or something else?
What genre and style of game appeals to you?
What platform do you want to play on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo?
Will you have time to sit down and play on a console or would a handheld or mobile game be a better fit for you?
Do you want to buy physical copies of games or digital copies?
Once you figure out the type of game you want to play the next thing is to check out reviews and ratings. There are literally thousands of websites that review and rate games. Most of them make it easy to sort and filter to the particular platform or genre you are considering purchasing.

Getting the best deal for your video game purchase online means doing a little more research. There are two strategies to get the cheapest price depending on whether you want physical or digital copies of your games.
Physical Copy Pricing
If you are craving to have a physical copy of your game there are two main options. Buy it new and sealed or go with a second-hand used copy. Buying new and sealed copies provides you with a certain guarantee that there will be no issues playing the game. But when you buy new the pricing can be a lot higher than buying used.
If you want to go used make sure you understand the ins and outs of buying a used copy. Sites like eBay and Facebook Marketplace are great places to start. Even Amazon and GameStop will sell used copies on their sites. Check the various sites to find the best deal on used games. And always check to see if there is any guarantee that the copy will work and if you can return the item if it doesn’t.
Digital Pricing
Pricing digital games is a lot simpler. You are not just limited to one location to buy digital copies. For instance, if you want an Xbox game, you can buy copies from the Microsoft Store on your Xbox or go to Amazon and buy a digital key to redeem.
PC games are very similar you can buy them from Steam, GOG, or the Epic store. Even Amazon and other retailers offer PC games so make sure and check around if you want to play the game on PC.
Getting the best deal
To get the best deal always compare prices. You can use price comparison sites like CamelCamelCamel or Slickdeals to see historical prices and sales. You can also add games to your wishlist on most platforms and when the game goes on sale you will typically get an email.
Most big websites like Steam or the Microsoft Store run sales almost every other month. Eventually, the game you want will go on sale, just be patient and check often when you see a sale going on.
Also, one thing to consider is some of the big publishers give away games for free occasionally. The epic store gives away two free games a month, and if you are an Amazon Prime member you can get free games each month via GOG.
Subscription services
Another option is to consider signing up for a subscription service. PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate are fantastic ways to save money by providing you access to hundreds of games for a monthly fee. Game Pass Ultimate adds new games each month and all first-party Microsoft games will come to the service the day they are released at no extra charge.
If you play a lot of games and like variety in the games you play, or just like trying new games then a subscription service might make sense for you. The only main drawback of these services is they typically require you to always be online. If your internet isn’t good or reliable then a subscription service might not work.

Depending on what game you want and if you are wanting a physical or digital copy of your game you have a lot of options for finding games to buy online.
Most major consoles have their very own store built into the console. It is typically just another app that you can log in to and purchase games that will apply to your console.
For PC players you have several platforms to buy games on. Steam is currently the best location to buy games as its library is very extensive and its app to buy and launch games is very user-friendly.
But for PC Steam is definitely not the only option. Here are some other options to buy PC games.

Before buying a game on Steam make sure to check the other platforms for sales so you get the best deal available.
If you are looking for retro games such as NES, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, or Gamecube you have one main option. eBay.
But once again eBay is not the only option to find retro games. In fact, you might pay a higher premium buying retro games on eBay because the market is really high right now. Some of the other options to find retro games.

When you look at the back of your NES cartridges you may notice that almost all of them are held together by 3 screws. But if the game is old enough you might just have another NES cartridge variant called the 5-screw cartridge. You may also notice that the 3-screw cartridges have tabs at the top while 5-screw NES cartridges do not have the tab.

Why did Nintendo switch to 3 screws?

The more recent cartridges use a 3 screw design with tabs on the top to hold them together. It is widely believed this was done for two reasons.
The first reason is a reduction in manufacturing costs. Most likely an engineer was tasked with saving money to mass produces game cartridges and said if they could reduce the number of screws it would make the production costs go down.

The second reason might have been for security reasons. The 3 screw design doesn’t use a standard screwdriver bit. If you want to take apart a 3-screw cartridge you need a special security bit or a screwdriver with a special security bit head to unscrew the screws.
The 5 screw cartridges simply used standard screws. Although if you notice carefully Mike Tyson’s Punchout!! had the old-style screws and is a 3-screw cartridge with tabs.
What makes the 5-screw NES cartridges desirable?

The 5-screw cartridges are mostly older variants of the games. The design change happened around 1987 and some games were caught in the middle of the changeover.
One of the factors that make the 5-screw more desirable is scarcity. Depending on when the changeover happened for that game depends on how many 5-screw variants are in the market. Just like any other collectible rarity drives up the price.
Another reason the 5 screw variants are in higher demand is some of them contained a Famicom to NES converter. Before 1987 there was an oversupply of Japanese PCBs so they used them in the American version of the cartridges. But in order to do so they had to include a converter.

This was a cheaper way to get a converter but now you can simply find converters for dirt cheap online.
Not all 5-screw cartridges are desirable. Some have more 5-screw variants in the market so the pricing on those versions is less than the 3-screw version of the cartridge.
What is the most well-known 5-screw cartridge?
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!
Mike Tyson’s punchout is a desirable NES game for several reasons. It is considered one of the best games ever made on the NES, it was basically a puzzle game disguised as a sports game, and it featured Mike Tyson who is one of the best and most well-known boxers of all time.
The reason it is so valuable compared to other 5-screw variants is it was released right at the tail end of the conversion from 5 screws to 3 screws. This means there were very few 5-screw variants of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! ever made. But it still isn’t the most expensive 5-screw cartridge.
What is the most expensive 5-screw cartridge?
Mega Man
Mega Man is a desirable game for most Nintendo enthusiasts. But the rarity of a 5-screw Mega Man NES cartridge is hard to ignore. Looking at historical sales there has only been a handful ever sold. And the last one to sell was over $10,000!
If you find a 5-screw Mega Man NES cartridge you may have just won a mini jackpot. But for me, I would have to keep it for myself.
